It goes without saying that I’m going to hunt up the second and third volumes of this series when they’re ready.... And there’s stuff going on in Anne Steelyard that I want to see how it gets resolved. Recommended.
Encased in a beautifully painted (and admittedly cheesecake) cover by Glen Orbik, Anne Steelyard waits to be discovered by all but the youngest comics fans.
Anne Steelyard and the Garden of Emptiness is a tremendous effort. I can't find a single thing that bothered me or that I disliked. It starts strong and ends with a good lead into the second act.
The richness of the writing is matched by depth in artwork. Colorist Mike Garcia is more of a finisher in this respect. Superb layouts by Claude St. Aubin, who made The Victorian such a beautiful book from the same publisher, are given penciled lush detail by Kosakowski and Randall.
...Anne perseveres with a variety of unusual skills (for any time or gender) in an adventure that combines Indiana Jones and Lawrence of Arabia in an atmosphere of looming war and more than a touch of Mid-Eastern mysticism.
