The Return of Captain Gravity brings a retro feel to PFP
Houston, TX – December 2004 – Penny-Farthing Press’ first published title, Captain Gravity, will return December 2004 as a new six-issue mini-series entitled, The Power of the Vril.
Created by Stephen Vrattos, Captain Gravity first hit comics stands in 1998 and told the story of an African-American hero fighting Nazis and racial predjudice during Hollywood’s Golden Era. The new series will expand on that premise and send the main character into the midst of World War II in the late 1930’s.
“While the first series focused on Joshua/Captain Gravity’s evolution into a hero, the second series will portray the powers and adventures of a veteran crime fighter,” Editor-in-Chief Marlaine Maddux explained. “Joshua takes a very aggressive role in relation to the Nazi party and comes to terms with his feelings for Chase Dubois. Action, however, will take a front seat.”
Taking over the writing reigns from Vrattos, Joshua Dysart (Violent Messiahs, Chassi, Purgatori, Swamp Thing) brings a dark and pulp-novel quality to Captain Gravity as he delves into the darker recesses of history. He explores the rumored Nazi fascination with the occult and builds a mystical framework for his narrative.
In addition to a new writer, Captain Gravity and the Power of the Vril, also enjoys the talents of a entirely new creative team. Penciller Sal Velluto (Black Panther, Captain America, Batman), gives the book its retro feel and captures the emotional essence of the tale, while Inker Bob Almond (JSA, Black Panther, Decoy) enhances the art with his clean and dynamic line work. Colorist Mike Garcia (Batman, Top Ten, Tom Strong) creates a color palette reminiscent of Golden-Age Comic coloring, yet he incorporates all the magic of twenty-first century technology. In addition, Comicraft’s Albert Deschesne offers readers expertly designed and placed lettering.
“All in all, Captain Gravity and the Power of the Vril is a definite win,” PFP Publisher Ken White said. “The pulp story and art remind me of the comics I read as a kid, the comics that got me in this business to start with.”
Captain Gravity and the Power of the Vril is distributed through Diamond Comics Distribution, other direct-market channels, and through www.pfpress.com.
Penny-Farthing Press’ comic book line includes Decoy, The Victorian, Captain Gravity, Para, and Zendra. Their line of children’s books includes The Loch trilogy.
